Our reading group at work recently finished Lean Software Development, An Agile Toolkit by Mary and Tom Poppendieck. Having its roots in the well-known Toyota Production System, LSD focuses on helping software development Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit by Mary and Tom Poppendieck – 2003. This one is given by Mary Poppendieck, author of “Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit for Software Development Managers” and “Implementing Lean Software Development“. (N.B.: it turns out that there are a couple of books already written on lean software development, which I have not yet read. According to a survey carried out by a Standish group in 1994, most of the projects are unsuccessful due to certain management issues. Mary, with her husband Tom, is the author of the award winning books Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit and Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash. The authors present 7 Lean principles as how they are relevant in Software development. Book Log: "Lean Software Development, An Agile Toolkit". In such book, they presented the first translation of Lean principles to software development, plus 22 thinking tools to help translate those principles into agile practices. The statistics in the survey reflects that: Out of total 8000 projects that were surveyed only 16% of them were executed as per planning, delivered on time, using designated resources and can be termed as successful. In particular, I found Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit by Mary and Tom Poppendieck.
